How I Will Lose My Writing Name Poem by Shalom Freedman

How I Will Lose My Writing Name

Avot tells us
He who pursues his name
Will lose his name
I do not have that much of a name
But I have pursued my name
All my adult life
And I will in time definitely lose
Whatever name I have-
When I die will be one step
But there will be others afterwards
Self- postings shut down
True there are books
But many will probably disappear
For lack of sales
And those as firm as their publishers
And their ISBN's
Strong as Google Books
Will one day
When the worldwide network suddenly shuts down
Disappear also
And if not be buried in the distant multitude of billions of other names
All my great ambition for literary immortality
Will have been proven to have yielded zero
My name will not be as I will not be
And writing this now
Hoping it will be of value
Is only one more small passing
Of my own vanity of vanities
Which I hope
Will not be a cause of disappointment
To those who live after me.
