I, A Mere Crab Poem by Leria Hawkins

I, A Mere Crab

Rating: 5.0

I, a mere crab, in love with a fish
Wading thru waters, lives on a wish
Hoping to find in this silvery sea
That beautiful fish, so perfect to me

He comes to the shore, he drifts and he preens
Displaying his goods, or so it would seem
Then quick as a wink, he swims out of sight
Taking my heart, as he's taking his flight

So great is the ocean, so small are we
Oh, how will I find him, in this vast lonely sea?
He swims far away, so fast, oh so fleet
While I make a home on a pebbly beach

A masterful flirt, a dally...a tease!
Strutting his stuff, so bewitching to me
He swims to the coast, to offer his kiss
Then away he will dart, to the distant abyss

Years have gone by, so long did I wait
For the king of the sea, my heart, my soulmate
And though he did come, by night and by day
His whispers all fade, as he's swimming away

So lonely I am, so weary my heart
Differences so great, keep us apart
My shell has grown thick, but tucked deep inside
Is a heart still ablaze, the flame never died

A passion, a prince…a beautiful sight
The fish of my dreams, my greatest delight
I harbor this love, to the depths of my soul
But I must retreat, and return to my hole.
