I Am A Lucky Fellow Poem by Francis Duggan

I Am A Lucky Fellow

I am a lucky fellow to have lived another day
Since better and younger than me with the departed lay
They have not been so lucky the reaper took them young
And little use to them now if their praises are sung,
I am a lucky fellow never had a bad injury
And any life threatening illness has never affected me
Some of those I went to school with are numbered amongst the dead
They did not hear their eulogies or the nice things their friends of them said,
I would rather be living with little to my name
With very little money and even less of fame
Than be a departed hero I would rather to live on
To be a very old man and be forgotten when I'm gone
For my life it will be over it will not matter to me then
If I'm not to be remembered as a hero amongst men.
