I Am One Poem by Jennifer Peckins

I Am One

Everyone sleeping around me
Ignoring the music
Following the fresh cut path
All because they had to choose it
There’s nothing holding them up
Just a table, not comforting
Trying to bury themselves in the shallow surface
No human is supporting
They’ve been here so long
Waiting for their legs to strengthen
They sit and dream
As their time here lengthens
I am one of them
The people of broken dreams
The ones covering their mouths
So no one hears their screams
I am one of them
The people who wake up to find themselves lost
They have nowhere to go
No emptiness they haven’t crossed
I am one of them
Digging our way out
Finding an endless tunnel
No one to come for us because they don’t know what we’re about
I am one of them
Just a dark soul
Crying alone
With no one to hold
