I Am Tired Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

I Am Tired

He told them ‘I am tired, I am tired
I am tired.'

‘But why? ' they asked

‘My heart be broken always
Subdividing, ' said he.

Then he took up the lyre and
With the taking up
Lighted his face
Coursed his blood
And tiredness began to
Fade.

To sing he began and as
Time passed
He sang and sang
Less tired
And
With ever minute
More and more
Fired.

And then they said: ‘Look
There's fire in his eyes
As he sings'

He ceased to sing and
Said
‘Now I am finished in
Singing.
For singing must
Inspired be.
And
Inspiration is of its time
And
Then subsides.'
Heard they
Said no word they
And one by one went they
Away.
