I Have Always Seen Icon In You: Poem by Liza Sud

I Have Always Seen Icon In You:

I have always seen icon in you:
in your turn and the tilt of your head,
as through a lot of times, many days
You were smiling at me on the way.

And you come not to me, but to God,
And to Him you say: 'do not forget'.
And you soar like a small bird with love.
even when you just smile and you whist.

and I also like a little settlement,
that was lost in the woods, very far.
and I see you in it with a cradle,
and I also see spring in your eyes.

***

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This is a blessed poem, and it filled me with the most wonderful calm the first time I read it. And then I read it again and the calm spread all over me and around me and into the world nearby. And the world always needs calming. The opening line is a marvelous endorsement of the addressee, and it dovetails with the perfect closing line. To be linked to both icon art and the freshest season of the year is a peak experience. And I love the passage in the middle - YOU COME NOT TO ME, BUT TO GOD - that is a breath-taking surprise but you make it seem like the most natural of events. I was writing you this week about the intellectual crisis of THEODICY - which the trechnical word for a theological account of EVIL (as in Milton's PARADISE LOST: To justify the ways of God to man) . And today you send me (and others) this splendid poem of sweetness and light that tenderly brings God and humanity so close they can converse, and then the human being becomes a bird with love - isn't that an angel?
