I Saw God In Gortavehy Poem by Francis Duggan

I Saw God In Gortavehy

I saw God in Gortavehy
One June evening fair and still
And he boating in the mountain lake
By Caher's rocky hill.

In the boat with him were angels
Singing songs of paradise
To their white robed king and master
With long white beard and shining eyes.

He looked the true king of heaven
And his countenance did glow
And his long white hair was whiter
Than the dazzling artic snow.

In the lake of Gortavehy
I saw heaven's king afloat
And saw and heard winged angels singing
In a rainbow coloured boat.

O'er the Gortavehy heather
Larks were singing songs of joy
Serenading the one true king
In the blue and sunny sky.

But then the boat suddenly disappeared
And i stood there all alone
Near the lake of Gortavehy
By a hill of het and stone.

And the sky larks stopped their singing
And silence fell across the vale
And the heaven born had vanished
Leaving me to tell the tale.

Now reader you may think i'm lying
But under oath i swear
That i saw God in Gortavehy
With his angels boating there.

I saw god in Gortavehy
On a pleasant eve in June
And listened to his sweet voiced angels
Where the golden gorse flowers bloom.
