I Should Have Told Him Poem by Ruth Gordon

I Should Have Told Him

His words cut through the war in my head
Telling me, I’d be loved, to go back to bed

I should have told him then
I should have told him then

You can only be saved once, he whispered
I let him decide and he lingered

I should have told him then
I should have told him then

All my hopes were broken
But he healed them with words he’d spoken

I should have told him:
That I wasn’t about to fade
Because you had already had me saved

I should have told him:
You are still here though,
I am waiting for the final blow

I should have told him:
That now I sit and wait
Hoping not to speed up fate

I should have told him:
I must thank you for being there
for reminding me of breathing air

I should have told him:
I wonder if you know
That I love you so

I should have told him:
You will always be at least my friend
Whom I pray for, and my love I send

...

But now it is too late for that,
For not even his pretty cat,
Can see the man that we adore,
As he is not the same anymore.

Lovely poem! It's always a shame, when people change, or leave and we are left feeling like we have unfinished business. Sadly, I know of no way to heal the hole that developes in one's soul when that happens...perhaps time...perhaps the words still need to be uttered, no matter what...perhaps...it's never really too late... Hugs, Dee
