I Should Have Written Beautifully About You! Poem by Kondwani Simwaba

I Should Have Written Beautifully About You!

I should have written beautifully about you!
I should have written you a beautiful poem; I should have spoken about your virtues instead.
I should have written about your smile; maybe a paragraph or two about your long nose.
I should have written about your touch; a stanza or two about my short breathes.
I should have written about our kisses; the heart palpitations your lips gave me.
I should have written about Christmas; the night we stood under the moonlight.
I should have written about the movie nights; those god-awful popcorns I despised.
I should have written about those beautiful memories;
An ode about our beautiful past, but I fixated on the pain instead;
You see everyone is a villain in someone's story;
Perhaps I should have cast you differently in my movie,
But you directed my eyes to produce tears that premiered on our departure night;
Perhaps I should been much more grateful about us and what we were.
I shouldn't have written about the pain; I should have let it pass like the rain.
I shouldn't have written about the shame; because you weren't really wholly to blame.
I shouldn't have written about your leaving; gratitude must have replaced the grieving.
I should have written about you; this poem must have been about our love,
Because that's really all we ever knew…
