I've Been There Poem by Dallas Carter

I've Been There

You think that you're worthless, that your life has no meaning,
That everything you do, every word you speak is insignificant.
You keep to yourself, keep your thoughts to yourself,
Hold the pain inside, don't bother letting anyone in, they might get destroyed.

Better to leave this place before you can hurt anyone else,
Before someone else loves you, before you can break their heart.
Let the darkness creep through, surrounding you, suffocating you.
The blade is in your hand, the rope around your neck.

Just one cut, just one jump, that's all it takes and no one will have to deal with you.
All your pain will be gone, this world would be better without you.
Just swallow the pills, and wash it down with tequila,
No one will notice your absence in class, at work, at home.

Little do you know, you're not alone, you're not unloved,
Someone is watching, wishing you would come back to them.
Someone else knows your pain, and they're thinking the same thoughts as you.
The feeling of hopelessness, despair, worthlessness.

But they're wrong and so are you, for we are all together in this darkness.
As the sun comes up across the horizon, marking the start of a brand new day,
Do me a favor and look at the light, think ahead of the new day's beauty.
Every day is a gift, with little miracles waiting for you.

And when the sun sets at the end, make yourself a list.
Just three things on that list, three miracles from that day.
Share them with someone special, someone you care about,
Because we all get times where we want to give up, we want to quit.

We all need someone to show us we're loved.
