I Was Lying On The Sand, Poem by Liza Sud

I Was Lying On The Sand,

I was lying on the sand,
I was reading Bible -
Numbers, about Abraham,
stoning of the bad guys,

punishment for forty years
for their unbelieving
for their un-wholeheartedness
God surpassed all dreaming!

I was lying on the sand.
it was cold but pleasant,
and my mood uplifted, rised,
and my demons went out.

I was lying on the sand,
and my skin was talking
with the sands of Abraham,
their eternal story!

Sand is here, in the North,
Sand is just a matter.
poet suddenly imposed
sacred gift to utter!

You were not just reading the Bible the way you read a novel or poem. You were experiencing a direct contact with the ancient figures, this is part of the SACRED GIFT you acknowledge at the end. And the spiritual effect was to dispel demons in your mind: of course they left you free because your interior was imbued with sacred words and there was no place for them to hide. Whether this was a literal or figurative experience could be discussed, but it was surely a REAL experience. This is what theologians name a NUMINOUS experience, when the sacred reality breaks into the sensory world and you are lifted above the ordinary. It's a blessing you can share with others, as you do in making a poem about it.
