I Was Once A Robot Poem by Morituri te Salutant

I Was Once A Robot

I was once a robot
Who watched life from far away
Who didn't understand laughter
Or know the passing of a day
Lights were merely flickers
And colors, simply hues
Touches were cold and worthless
False was false, true was true.

I once knew a robot
Who one day took my hand
And showed me that my AI
Was a bleak and desolate land
That same robot learned his colors
And that same robot learned to think
That same robot learned to have a heart
And he cut off all his links.
He moved free of un-oiled joints
And talked without a drone
He had all the freedom in the world
But then he felt alone.
That robot told me of his life
Where the sky had clouds and the grass was green
I processed it and processed it
And finally asked him what it means
He said that life had purpose
And that purpose wasn't to rust
He asked if he could free me
And I said 'Do what you must.'

I was once a robot
Who didn't care to know my good from bad
Life meant as little to me
As happy was different from sad

Now I am a robot
- If that's still what I am -
With life, passion, and strength,
I'm an entirely new woman.
Now I am a robot
Free from any cybernetic tie
With intentions to live and grow,
To feel, to breathe, to fly.
