I Went Up The Hill To Pick Flowers Today Poem by Jeshua Logsdon

I Went Up The Hill To Pick Flowers Today

Rating: 3.5

I went up the hill to pick flowers today,
A place I have been several times before.
Blessed by the light of the early morning sun
Overlooking the city with an infecting sense of pride.
A panoramic and heart-calming vision.

Color surmounts the toneless grass without sympathy.
A jumble of reds, blues, yellows, and pinks
Radiant roses and breath-taking bellflowers
All for me to observe.
All for me to choose.

When I went up the hill to pick flowers today.
It was a cool, dewy spring morning.
I trekked through the grass
And up the well-beaten path,
Counting my steps as I went.

I passed by the lilies, the roses, and vines
Even stopped momentarily to absorb the beauty around me
So many to choose from! So many to see!
But I journeyed along
To find the ones I would carry back home.

At the top of the hill, I picked flowers today
A bundle of roses with a few lovely lilies
that built a beautiful bouquet, picturesque at the least,
And although garnished with baby’s breath and bachelor buttons,
the collection just didn’t seem complete

and I just couldn’t seem to get it off my mind
all the flowers, though beautiful,
seemed bland and trite
but there’s never been anything else in the garden
so I’ve learned to cope and make best of what I can find

I searched the hill for new flowers today
And was just about to give up
When I spied, from beneath a holly bush,
Something different
Something purple and white.

I knelt down at the bush and lifted the branch
To expose a little, fair flower
A tiny, bent member of the viola family
More beautiful,
and unique, than any other.

I came down from the hill with a flower today
A single, little flower
Not a bouquet of the same
Just one of the new
And I don’t think I’ll ever go back
