I Will Consume Shadows Poem by Erika Mohr

I Will Consume Shadows

As the darkness consumes and the light grows dimmer
I hear the thousands of restless souls on Earth.
They beg me to bring them to the light.
I want to help them and light their darken path,
But as their paths fill with the light my unscarred soul gives,
My own path turns to a shade of grey.
The power and light no longer embraces me.
Instead I look up to see a crowd of souls,
Glowing brighter than the difference of Ixchel and Hunahpu.
I look down at my reflection, in a lifeless lake,
Unable to stand the blinding glow the souls now possess.
In the reflection I am a stranger of grey,
And my aura is filled with shadows.
The shadows I consumed from the restless souls.
Now their paths burn bright and they will find peace.
I am no longer bright, for I carry the burdens of a thousand souls.
But, my shoulders are strong and peace will someday come to me.
For now, thousands of peaceful souls for one restless…
That is a sacrifice I willingly took, but the glowing reward was worth my now scarred soul.
