Identify Me Poem by Miss Tee

Identify Me

There comes a time in everyone's life when a question is pondered
With anxiety and stress, or simple curiosity.
When profound thoughts rest uneasy in your mind and soul...
Becoming a crease in your peace, difficult to put into verse and conveyed...
It's in those hours of silence that you ponder on your roots and on what has gone before you.
Asking about the men and women who've struggled by the sweat of their brows...day and night, hoping for a better light.
What of them?
But what of you?

And so...
A spotlight is shone unto obscured identity...
and your identity, your heritage becomes an issue...
brutally awakened and turned into a hunger to be appeased...
You question your purpose, looking to the past to provide all answers.
Looking behind in those hours of silence in order to understand
and grow from what stemmed...
To explain to others that you are more than your skin...
your face...your lips...your hair...or your sex...
that you are more than your religion...…
and simply more than a face in the crowd...
