If I Could Be Your Angel
I would take you by the hand
And slowly lead and guide you
Toward the love at your command
I'd steer you toward the goodness and
Tranquility of life
And shield you from life's letdowns or
Accompanying strife
I'd let you only know the men
Whose hearts are ever-glowing
Whose kind and calming love would be
Forever overflowing
You wouldn't see the others
With their darkness and unrest
For you would quickly find a way
Of capturing the best
No longer would you need to plead
For love or self-respect
Nor yearn for one's affection
Or the trust that you expect
If I Could Be Your Angel
You would surely find a Love
Whose pure, unselfish presence
Bestows blessings from above
Your newfound mate won't need to change
To be all that you seek
And you don't need to gravitate
Toward any man that weak
He will not need your tutoring
As it is not your place
To carefully remold him
Or to lessen his disgrace
And you would be so far above
The life that you had known
Your standards would now put you
In a place to call your own
A given would be patience as
Your cup would runneth over
And all the kindness you have shown
Would cleanse you in its clover
You'd gently walk away from dark
Manipulating foe
As strength tucked deep inside you
Would emerge and start to grow
If I Could Be Your Angel
In a little while you'd see
That you don't have to settle
As, My Angel, you're now free!
