If I Had A Poem This Morning Poem by Shalom Freedman

If I Had A Poem This Morning

IF I HAD A POEM THIS MORNING

If I had a poem this morning
And I could write it
With all my soul,
Then I would feel somehow
That I and this day are worthwhile.

But what I have
Is for the moment
Only these words.

And these words slowly emerging on the page
Feel awkward and lonely and slow and prosaic.

Still they are my words, my thoughts
What I have now to give.

And what if we so much want to give
And what we have to give
Is of no value to anyone else
At all?
