If Only Poem by Tess Green

If Only

Well, this was actually written for someone who liked my poetry. He's in a band, and wanted to know if I could write him a song.

Originally, he wanted a song that would pull in different currect issues by using just one message to tie them together. I had problems with that, so I ended up just using one subject, with different types of the subject. Abuse-Mental, physical, sexual and deadly,

So here is what I came up with!

If only

Shoved again, hit again..
A few more bruises.
As tears roll down her face.

Darkened eyes hidden beneath bug like
sunglasses to cover up his mistakes
And he takes her hand and says:

'Hey babe. I'm sorry..
I love you, I really do.
Forgive me this time.
It won't happen again...I swear!
I'm too much in love with you.'

And how she wishes that were true....

If only that was the truth.
If only it could be...

...(whispering) If only...

A lawyer comes home to his tiny apartment already half soused.
He creeps into his tiny son's bedroom and slides under his covers..

The child closes his eyes and silently prayers..
Waiting for the tremendous pain to come his way.

Daddy grabs his little boy tightly into his arms
Pressing his sons face deeply into his chest.

'Ssh.. I'm sorry that I hurt you like this.
You're the only one I have. I wish it didn't
turn out like this, I'm sorry. It won't happen again.

And oh he wishes that were true..

As silently as he crept in, he was gone.
The little boy huddled in a corner, and
cried himself to sleep.

And..

If only that was the truth.
If only it could be...

...(whispering) If only...

False accusations
Hatred growing slowly
Twisted meanings which
make his mind go blank.

Constant fights
Angered eyes.
Pathetic pleads
Lost emotions
A weakening love.

' I'm sorry, don't leave me.
I need you, I want you.
I can't breathe without you.
I love you.'

Oh how he wishes it were true.

If only that could be the truth.
If only it could be...

..(Whispering) If only..

If only this could all be simple
If only this would never happen.
Effecting the mind, body and soul,
Don't let it tear you apart.

..(whispering) If only..

One day, too far.
A bloody mess sprawled across the floor.
Her beautiful hair,
Once blonde, now a rich dark red.

Oh how they wish this weren't true.

If only this hadn't happened and wasn't the truth.
A cruel joke maybe, but not the truth,
If only this was a dream..

..(Whispering) If only. (2x)

Her delicate face
Smashed into the ground
A million pieces.
Her eyes in the back of her head.

Next day, the news.
Then comes court
Everyone glaring
Why did you have to hurt her?
What did she do to you?

Don't toy with others
when they look up to you.
Don't lead them believe you
love them when all you want
to do is hurt them
And watch them them fall apart….

(instrument solo of some sort? For a dramatic pause.)

Where did all these twisted people come from? (sadistic like whisper)

..(whispering) if only.. (faded until the end)
