If Only Poem by Nyagaka Charles

If Only

The other day we were desperate,
All 'cause we wanted change,
We wanted the 'Kenya we want',
Thanks to our political leaders.

They built us heaven in hell,
Sent us on a tour into space,
Constructed a milk pipeline network,
Replaced matatus with jets,
Roads n paths were made flawless,
Wireless electricity was unthought of!

So big and beautiful a paradise,
Built with so little building material;
Only twenty_six alphabetical letters,
And a couple of punctuation marks as pillars.
A tight budget it was,
Thanks be to our creative leaders,
What if they had looked upon the taxes?
And included them in the budget?
If only...,
If only they had,
A little bit more of building material...
