If Only For Sean Fay Poem by Francis Duggan

If Only For Sean Fay

Can Westmeath win next year's all Ireland senior hurling? unlikely most would say
Though I would love to see them win if only for Sean Fay
For he takes hurling seriously and he comes from Westmeath
And he feels disappointed each time that they get beat.

Sean himself was a hurler and some fine games he did play
And he was a good forward and a strong man in his day
And he could shoot a goal or point and for big man moved quick
And he worried good defenders and proved handy with the stick.

Oft had a beer with Sean Fay in the Bayswater Hotel
And the main topic was hurling as I remember well
And his farewell words would always be 'go easy on the beer'
And watch for Westmeath hurlers they will come up trumps next year.

Westmeath has one great hurler the mighty Mick Kilcoyne
And for Blackrock in Cork Championship great hurlers he outshine
But one swallow doesn't make a Summer one man doesn't make a team
And though Westmeath have more good hurlers still not good enough 'twould seem.

Galway and Tipperary are Ireland's best nowaday
And from All Ireland Championship Westmeath seems far away
But who knows their turn might yet come though unlikely most would say
Still I would love to see them win if only for Sean Fay.
