Immortal Poem by Jessica Kelly

Immortal

Rating: 5.0

It is a perpetual pain
that she endures.
But she endures.

She doesn't let it show
for reasons of which she's unsure.
Perhaps the music is just too loud
to face.
Perhaps feeling the feeling
makes it just... too real.
Perhaps she's afraid that if she cries,
they may say 'I told you so'...
or say nothing at all.
Perhaps she just knows
that no one really understands,
that no one will ever understand.
Perhaps she's tired of hearing
that she's a drama queen...
and doesn't want to give anyone
an excuse to call her such.
Or maybe she just feels she must live up
to the strength that others have seen in her,
the strength
that some days makes her weak.

Maybe it is all of these.
More likely, it is none.

She's not sure why she hides
the reality of her perpetual pain.
To wear her woe would be unfair
to her daughter
and to those who love her so.
It would be unrighteous for those
who delight in her happiness.

There is one from whom
she does not hide her tears.
But sadness and guilt
must wear him,
and she has no intentions
of adding to his grief.
And so, even when it is he,
the one who knows her most,
she minimizes her grief
(and the screen when he enters the room
as she's viewing the most recent photos
of their love surrendered) .

On the days of gray skies,
she cries in pain.
But it is not the pain
of child lost.
It is her full sink
and unfolded laundry.
It is her dry bank account
and upcoming feats.
It is anything that will disguise
the reality that aches beneath her chest.

The pain is not a sharp one.
Though incessant, it is actually rather dull.
But is a persistent dull pain
any better than a fleeting sharp one?

She continues to give thanks.
She knows He sees past the facade,
and that she cannot hide.
His arms clothe and heal
her naked brokenness.
Her burdens lay at the foot of the cross.

Her wounds have been healed.
But sometimes even divine healing
does not erase the scars.
To erase the scars
would be to erase the memories.
And she would not want to
erase the memories
that have taught her,
molded her,
created who she's become.

And so, the pain persists.
Scars do not vanish.
Human emotion does not cease.
And she
is more human than she'd like to admit.
