In Lagos, God Is Our Neighbour Poem by Abubakar Abdulkadir

In Lagos, God Is Our Neighbour

The compact city of bustling calm
where colours of diverse cultures and ancient tribe
tread to form the rainbow that festooned her roof

The touristy ghetto with charming boulevard
of trees that stood like innocent maidens at sunset

Her sleepless years sharpened her face
with the glitters of alluring streetlights
like the stars by Eden's gate

Welcome to this city that walks
in the kingdom of the cripples?

Whose saliva, to her children, is herbs
that cures the hopeless

Whose palms abound with beaches
that ease the troubled

Welcome to Lagos; the centre of excellence
