In sleep we hope to forget the painful
and relive the exquisite
But sleep is like time, like water, like a foreign soul
Its vagaries run a course of their choosing
The mind flows and dams beyond control
Shapes shift of their own accord
Words leap out and disappear
We cannot be fishermen
After sleep we wake from storms
from absolute calm
And our world is the same and forever changed
