Flattery is such a subtle trait,
It can storm any space with a gentle gait.
Ah! It has survived the sweep of time,
And, defied epochs to reach its prime.
Rulers and potentates patronised flattery,
Poets and courtesans felt it was no knavery.
To this day, the rich & mighty like to be fawned on,
Much like lovers revelling in amorous goings-on.
Minds sway, hearts melt when the flatterer sighs,
Man envies man who coaxes to scale new highs.
This flattery, indeed, is doubly blessed,
The donor pampered; the recipient harnessed!
To the priggish, this earth is defiled by lackeys,
They know not what it takes to unlock with buttered keys.
Sugary words triumph over natural flair,
The unflattered only has an ally in despair.
Don't feel queasy with flattery so ubiquitous,
For there's always someone to replenish its corpus.
You goggle at its sorcery as a mortal,
And, wonder, if unlike man, flattery is immortal.
