Independence Poem by Nika McGuin

Independence

Rating: 5.0

You're gone,
left... casually
saying goodbye
as would I

You said it
the same way
you have for
the last six months
as if all was normal
and I'd see you tomorrow
the same time
here...

When in reality,
tomorrow is a mystery
you wont be there...
who will guide me
& keep me on task?

Independence came much sooner
than I thought it would

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Dedicated to Mrs. Brenda Talbert

We both work/worked temporary receptionist jobs in the same company. She worked the morning shift, and I the evening. She was my teacher and mentor on the job. But the inevitable happened, and her term there was through. this poem captures that day - the day she left.

I like in this poem what was the heart of the loss - it's unexplained abruptness. That's so truthful. We cross paths with people briefly, just long enough to know they matter to us and WHOOOSH they're gone. You capture that disorientation of the sudden reversal of comfortable expectation. I felt it too through the poem. When I read the prose comment it fleshed out the poem, made the disappearance understandable. But the poem is naked: no explanation, no accomodation.

Very thoughtful. Filled with deep sentiment and gratitude. We feel the relationship. Terrific projection and very well written.
