A smile at a stranger's warmer
than a hostile gaze that's thrown this way.
I wonder if I dreamed that glow,
warm as ember, soft as snow.

Like the comparison in your words. Life is surely confusing enough. We need poets to help sort it all out (and they are kin to the philosophers, aren't they?)
