Inertia Poem by Vaida Marea

Inertia

She verses the words to him
Fragile and sweet
With her head on his chest
She can hear his heart beat
And he gives his response
But there's emptiness there
He's capricious and guarded
And just doesn't care
Still, he pulls her in tighter
She forces a smile
Closes her eyes
And pretends for a while...

Later, when they make love
She can see that there's none
The reality burns her
Like rays from the sun
And her porcelain skin
Once untouched and pure
Is swept into his arms
And tainted once more

She feels they're miles apart
When he's inside of her
She thinks it makes her sad
But she's really not sure
She keeps holding her tongue
And waiting to see
Some kind of sign that she's done the right thing
But all that she gets is the sound of breathing
He's asleep next to her
She wakes him with a kiss
She'll never have the nerve
To risk losing this
