Innocent Man Poem by John Carter Brown

Innocent Man

INNOCENT MAN

In the cold light of day, in the heat of the night
I had nothing to say, I had no case to fight
they were asking of me, where I was at the time
I re-stated my plea, I committed no crime

From a whole lot of nothing, so-called evidence came
and I was the man they were trying to blame
I was grilled by the cops, they were talking at me
but I didn't listen, I just longed to be free

And in one reckless moment, I upped and I ran
and as God is my witness...I'm an innocent man

Then a witness came forward, to back up my claim
but that didn't work, I was just caught again
I said, "You've got the wrong man, and that's why I ran"
they told me that soon I'd be back in the can.

And so, like before, I upped and I ran
and as God is my witness...
Yes, just like before, I upped and I ran
and as God is my witness, I'm an innocent man.
