It Dawned On Me Poem by Rod Morris

It Dawned On Me

Rating: 5.0

I remember in my mid-life years I'd rise before the sun,
Then walk along a one-man beach before the day begun.
Innermost thoughts only breached by the crashing surf,
I looked toward the east and pondered on life's worth.
Of kids I'd met and lessons learnt at first primary school,
Later years at high school; realising knowledge is a tool.
Finally join the work force; academic, rural life or trade,
The choice is mine; I'd persevered, finally made the grade.
Teenage years so much fun; dancing, girls and sports,
Living for the moment; pitfalls furthest from my thoughts.
I was not given any warning as my heart was set on fire,
When she appeared before me; became my one desire.
Married, and had children; the start of greater things,
A new centre of attention and the joy that family brings.
Life in general can be good; though sometimes very strange,
Looking back, what I've held there's nothing I would change.
Many years experience; knocks and nudges set one free,
Walking on a one-man beach; it finally dawned on me.
