It Is As If I Want Something To Eat And Drink/That Does Not Exist Poem by Shalom Freedman

It Is As If I Want Something To Eat And Drink/That Does Not Exist

It is as if I want something to eat and drink
That does not exist
Is it chocolate?
Is it bread?
Whatever I eat now
Does not satisfy
I am hungry one second afterwards
I want a food that does not exist
I know the hunger is anxiety
I know it is the worry
The troubled situation
The health situation
The political situation
I know it is not just food
But I soon will have yet another coffee
And perhaps a tenth apple of the day
And still be hungry
And go to bed hungry
And tell myself again
I must show self- control
But I am hungry
