It Is Better Now Poem by RIC BASTASA

It Is Better Now

when the two of you
meet again
you become complete
strangers
in all your pretenses
smiles that do not mean
and occasional touches
that on the surface
feigns the warmth
fools the two of you
have become
before you wanted love that much
but time gave you
none
now you want to remember
but the walls have become so thick
to think
oh well
life's like that
even when we were small
when mother says
there is a place where
we cannot play
there is time when we have
to stop
reckoning
when darkness begins
to eat
whatever light is left
in our heads.
