Joe Buckley Poem by Francis Duggan

Joe Buckley

Joe Buckley was a good man and in him nothing small
For Millstreet and Slanan Rovers he played Gaelic football
And for the Millstreet Athletic Club he was a famed athlete
One of the great all rounders to come out of Millstreet.

He married Mary Corkery more than four decades ago
And their children in Ballinatona into adulthood did grow
So many knew and liked him and so many he did know
And not many in Duhallow who would not have heard of Joe.

Joe Buckley was a good person and in him so much good
A kind and helpful fellow he would help you if he could
Along his great life's journey he made friends every day
And to help other people he went out of his way.

The man who was Joe Buckley is one we will recall
In his prime years a mighty man athletic, strong and tall
In Duhallow and Cork County he mixed it with the best
He never was found wanting when he was put to the test.

From his home in Ballinatona he may be forever gone
But the legend of Joe Buckley in Millstreet will live on
An Athlete and Gaelic Footballer he carved his own renown
He was the pride of Cloghoula a few miles from Millstreet Town.
