Joseph Was A Carpenter Poem by Francis Duggan

Joseph Was A Carpenter

Joseph was a carpenter or so it has been said
And with the Virgin Mary perhaps he shared a bed
She was the mother of Jesus who lives in history
As the son of God who died on a cross on the Hill of Calvary

Joseph was a pure man untouched by sin that taint
And to the christian world a hero and a saint
'Tis said he led by good example through his devout life span
But don't ask me about him since i never knew the man.

Joseph was a carpenter two thousand years ago
And through the centuries of time his legend seemed to grow
He must have been a good man if what they say is true
But don't ask me to comment on one i never knew.

The great story of Joseph has been re-told world wide
And to the christian masses his name a sense of pride
And to the good Saint Joseph people for favours pray
And one who lived so long ago in spirit lives today.

Joseph was a carpenter and though he was quite poor
If you believe all that you read and hear his thoughts were always pure
And through the centuries of time his legend it has grown
But don't ask me to comment on one i've never known.
