July 1st,1916 Poem by Paul Warren

July 1st,1916

They rose from the trenches as one
On the Somme the morning it begun
The German machine guns fired on bearings
That cross fired the advancing troops uncaring

These were the Kitchener Battalions
Serving as pals each and everyone
Whole towns and streets of young men
Lost to their families in the end

So now they are old photos and memories
60,000 shot and 20,000 dead in carnage unimaginable you see
When you read of the accounts of the final scores
There truly needs to be A War to End All Wars.
