The speaker is a Catholic nun who is taking the veil, making a commitment to be a religious sister. She expresses her thoughts in strikingimages, rather than literally. She wants to be in fields where there is no cutting hail falling and where ' a few lilies blow'. She wants to be where there are no storms, where there are no green waves crashing loudly, and 'out of the swing of the sea'.
I think that the poem gains strength by its metaphorical language and the desire for peace which the nun feels and hopes for.
