La Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

La

La

Heard word "La" as a child
In Iran and parts of Persia,
Means many, in, amongst.

"La" is used in the names
To show that have been lot.

La-Seili
La-Mezhoo
La-Margh, and
Many more.

This takes me to old days,
The time when ancestors
Chose to run and escape
The force of invaders':
"Accept us as winners
And become a Muslim,
If not, follow our laws,
Live without any rights,
And have to pay Jazyeh! "
(Meaning tax, in excess.)

Both the males and females
Ran away with one shirt
On their backs, nothing else…

In the heart of mountains
Softened hills, made gardens
Used bare hands, built heaven.

My great ancestors,
Have loved you.
Will always.

Proudly, I praise
You, your ways,
Adore you forever.

I walk tall with head up,
In shadow of their souls.
