Lava / Lava Poem by Luz EtchemendiGaray

Lava / Lava

From the deepest part of the earth
volcanoes teach us
of the torments that are born
in the depths of each one,
spewing forth lava
that roars and streams downward,
devours the slopes, the crevises,
the forests, the abysses,
to them collapse
upon humanity that pleads
for new voices
to satisfy the scream
in its entrails.

From Spanish translated to English by Daniel Ginhson with comments by Sue Littleton:

Desde el fondo de la tierra
los volcanes nos enseñan
los tormentos que nacen
en la profundidad de cada uno
y se transforman en lava
que ruge y se despeña,
que devora las laderas, los resquicios,
los bosques, los abismos,
para luego desplomarse
sobre la humanidad que clama
nuevas voces
para satisfacer el grito en las entrañas.
