Let Her Find Her Way Poem by Mark Heathcote

Let Her Find Her Way

What is the meaning of marriage by hypergamy?
Is he likening her to cattle ready for market?
Marriage isn't a bill of sale.
Sir, is she your daughter or
Just another belonging to be disposed of well?
Is it right for you to choose who she should marry?
Is she expected to marry a man she has never met?
Because he may be wealthy and educated
And can provide a little bread.
Is it normal to wedlock without love?
At least show her some affection; let her find her way.
Slavery is a sutured wound that never heals
Expect gangrene and a malignant slow death,
A cancer that eats your soul bereft of salvation.
Expect nothing better than to be ignored and unloved forever.
Sure, this marriage would suit you much better than her.
