Let Me Listen To Some Reggae. Poem by Safiyyah Manjra

Let Me Listen To Some Reggae.

Rating: 5.0

There comes a time where your nights are spent listening to reggae.
The type of beat which gives you vibes of being stray.

Believe it or not to me those are the best of love songs.
You become so caught up in it you forget where you belong.

I don't know who the artist really are by the way,
Is it demeaning I am only interested in the messages they portray?
The vibes they give is so sweet it gives me away.

I come from a group of persons in society,
To whom reggae they treat as some form of contrary.
Thoughts of why I associate with such individuals come to mind initially.

They associate it with some form of backward thinking,
Which on a whole diminishes it's true meaning,
As a person from the Caribbean I find that insulting.

My mom used to listen to reggae,
I remember when we were young on Sunday mornings in the kitchen she would play,

That's when we lived in the country side,
Near to the beach where on weekends I would reside.

However that area of living wasn't ideal for business,
Father decided to leave in pursuit of progress.

There began the occurrences of no reggae on Sunday,
Instead, a drive down to the bay,
Or reading books which was just plain okay.
