Let The Caged Birds Sing! Poem by Namratha Swamy

Let The Caged Birds Sing!

Let the caged birds sings....A mother's dilemma!

Two little birds perched on a stick
within the cage
We call them Bluey and Squeaky.
Interestingly, Bluey chirps more than Squeaky who is almost silent.
After all, a mother fending for her eggs, waiting eagerly for them to hatch!
Bluey likes to spend time pecking on the mirror, yet he is alert when we are around the cage.
He almost sounds like pleading to be set free!
Bluey jumps in front of the cage door in anticipation whenever we are near.
Once in a while, Squeaky perches on the stick with Bluey and begins to chirp.
What are they talking about?
Are they complaining?
Yes, they have learnt to fly out when the cage door is opened.
They know they are free to roam around in the balcony garden.
They know they have their play toys there.
They know to perch on our hands or on the stick we hold.
Me, who has heard the caged birds sing, ask myself,
Is it safe for them to be released?
Will they fly in the open air brave and free?
Will they ever come back to us again?
The world, yes the world!
I know...
This concrete jungle is not their natural habitat....
Theey were born to be free, yes....
They were born to fly, yes....
They were born to claim the sky, yes...
They were born to be among the flora and fauna, yes.....
A mother myself, I would let them happily destroy my plants
rather than set them free!
I look forward again to listen to the caged birds sing!
Sing a song for freedom....the freedom which they clearly do not fathom.
