Life Of A Soldier Poem by Daniel Stobbs

I grew up in a military family,
Thinking it was the only route for me in life,
I still catch myself dreaming,
What that life would be like,

My friend Patrick joined the military,
It was what he dreamed of in life,
Patrick is no longer with us,
That’s what it could be like,

I wonder how they do it,
They are brave in the face of death,
Their hearts filled with sorrow,
Scared to face their last breath,

Nobody but the soldiers,
Really knows their grind,
Nobody knows what battle,
What’s going on in their mind,

Do they try to act tough?
Just to see the next light,
It’s hard to comprehend,
What they think during a fight,

You don’t have to support the mission,
Please don’t act like you understand,
Cowards who claim they do,
Just have their heads in the sand,

I don’t completely get the task,
If it’s for freedom or money,
There is no easy answer,
The subject is far from funny,

I have friends and family on duty,
I’m scared to watch the news,
I don’t want more heartaches,
I hate getting the blues,

I miss my friend Patrick,
I hope he knew what he was doing,
He was a born soldier,
He knew what was brewing,



I respect his selflessness,
In war there is no beauty,

I respect his honour,
His sense of duty,

This is dedicated to Patrick Pentland who sadly died in a LAV3 during a mission in Afghanistan.
This is also dedicated to all of the brave families of soldier’s who have served or are currently serving Canada in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and to the brave American men and women who are getting persecuted for their struggle. If you don’t support the mission please don’t persecute the foot soldier. Take it to the leaders of the world and make your voice heard.
