Like The Ocean Poem by Sarah Swillen

Like The Ocean

Because I am like the ocean
I come crashing,
Seeking welcome,
I break on the beach.
I seek the port of your heart and splash against the pilings.
I lap at your shores, gently wearing at you. But you do not yield- there are no tributaries to your capital.
I break. And He builds me again.

I will swell with love, with gladness and a terrible hope that will crush me back in on myself as I seek welcome.
Not sanctuary, not sustenance.
Nothing to bring you low-
Just your love, your acceptance.

I am like the ocean and I can wash away the dust accumulated in all the cracks where water should flow.
I am like the ocean and I seek your welcome to tell you what I know.
I want to memorize your stories, keepsake your name.

You are fine, your holdfast is tight. You will go on breathing and walking.
Stop to remember all those days by the ocean who loved you so well.
Think of the waves that God kissed with blessings for our youth.

Now you are the land that stays. Nothing will happen to you.
I will stay beside you as the water should, and I will be here, waiting to soak into the cracks made for me by the sun who knows that you can not move.
