Linking Hands Poem by Dave Dunn

Linking Hands

Linking Hands

There's an ache in my heart again as I watch the news
So many millions walking around with no food and no shoes
Mothers and fathers lost to the ravages of AIDS
Others taken by warfare, land mines or terror raids

Their numbers keep rising despite the daily death toll
Thousands expiring each day with so little love on show
Yet we all say that we care and ask our governments to send
Money and resources to those places so that it may soon end

Can we ever sleep while these children suffer such a plight
Here we are safe and sound despite the news we hear tonight
A shrinking world with it's modern ways and means they tell us
Reach out to these young and fragile children, our new neighbours

Everywhere I visit on this my computer screen today
There are folk that I chat with all filled with the same dismay
Jobs vanishing by the minute and security seems so frail
But all of us are in such luxury as millions starve and wail

Losses that we hear of are just paper that's let us all down
But still we treat our children to sweets in safe playgrounds
Tender though our thoughts must remain as we watch our own
Those orphans face a daily struggle such as we have never known

Linking hands across the water can we pass on our love and share
Take all that we have to give and let them see we truly care
Now is the time to act leave the ciggies with the tobacconist man
Let the wine stay in the bottle and the beer rest in it's tin can

Though daily thoughts and prayers will reach them surely too
Compassion makes a greater mark when actions are on view
Seeking out our friends and families to help us make this point
Saving all we can so that others can take ointments to anoint

Whether it's in Africa or Asia, Iraq or Gaza that we send
Our contributions will bring such relief and help to make amends
For all the depth of suffering we will never have to face
Or pictures on the tv will surely forever us disgrace
