Little Sister Poem by Samantha Campbell

Little Sister

Little Sister said

'You're Destined for Greatness'
and it was optimistic-hollow

Because a little voice in my head
said she was just being nice and sisterly
to coax out the hope in my soul
against the reality

I dont want greatness

I just want to be remembered

I Am Here

I Was Here

And at times like anyone else

I just wanted to be noticed
for something other than just
being the black-sheep backdrop
or in the corner of a family photo

trying to hide loneliness

with a fake smile

painted on a porcelain mask

To just be more than myself
even if it was just flickering
like a flame before it was snuffed out

But I felt it then and I feel it now
thinking about what she said
that flicker of hope came anyway

She'd noticed
a spoken word artist

who never had a voice

She Listened

She gave me a voice

And that was all anyone

or I could care for
knowing they were heard
