Living - Poem by Denise Levertov

The fire in leaf and grass
so green it seems
each summer the last summer.

The wind blowing, the leaves
shivering in the sun,
each day the last day.

A red salamander
so cold and so
easy to catch, dreamily

moves his delicate feet
and long tail. I hold
my hand open for him to go.

Each minute the last minute.

    - - ITALIAN TRANSLATION:

    VIVENDO

    Il fuoco è nella foglia e l'erba
    sembra così verde
    ogni estate, l'ultima estate.

    Il vento soffia, le foglie
    tremano al sole,
    ogni giorno, l'ultimo giorno.

    Una rossa salamandra
    così fredda e perciò
facile da catturare, come in sogno

    muove i piedi delicati
    e la lunga coda. Tengo
aperta la mano per lasciarla andare.

    Ogni minuto, l'ultimo minuto.

This is a beautiful poem. It reminds me of 'Change' by Charlotte Zolotov, for some reason. (Report) Reply
