Long Distance Romance On A Short Wave Radio Poem by Patrick O'Reilly

Long Distance Romance On A Short Wave Radio

I'll be in crossing the Maine state line in just about a mile
Can't quite hear you through the static
Lemme fiddle with the dial
I ask you how you're doing
Cause it sure has been awhile
Glad to be talking to you
I can almost hear you smile

Now my hood is shinin' underneath a blue moon
If I can drive all night
I can be in New Haven by noon
And the radio is playing
Some sad piano blues
You know I'm just passing through

I hear the leaves in New England look decent in the fall
When the sky is full of chimney smoke
And they turn rust iron red
You know I've never seen them, I'm always moving after all
And it's been such a long time since
I saw the warm side of a bed

Now my eyes are burning like tail lights in the dark
As I'm groaning down the turnpike
And I can't see very far
I'm grateful for your voice, babe,
But what else can I do?
You see, I'm only just passing through

You see, I'm getting old and tired, and most of my love is gone
You get pretty lonely
When the night goes on so long
But I know a diner not too far from you
Where they pour the coffee strong
And who am I to argue what feels right
And what is wrong

And now my hood is shinin', underneath a blue moon
You've been plucking on my heartstrings
But the damn things are out of tune
And it's a crying shame
But what else can you do
See I'm only just passing through
