Marianismo Poem by Joseph Edwards

Marianismo

Headlines today say femicide in Mexico is real
The body of a 25 year old woman was found lifeless
At the scene, a man was also discovered alive
His body was covered in bloodstains
Authorities say it was a crime of passion
La Llorona is an age old tale
A crime of passion too
Full of woe and wickedness for sale
She is the ghost of a woman scorned
Men have told this tale for generations never forlorn
Through their lens the woman is to blame
Hate La Llorona for not playing marianismo in a machismo game
But she only did what a man drove her to do
He promised the world and lied and cheated to
Why do we not chastised him for being a brute
Machismo, machismo, machismo is the root
The root has blossomed into a violent tree
They kill our mothers, sisters, and daughters
Cover it up, distract from the truth
Retell a misogynistic tale to youth
One that blames the woman and never the man
Brainwashing and twisting the land
I know the story, I have been warned
Scared into submission by men scorned
They are the real monsters
Killing and dumping us in to graves unmarked
But no justice will come
I emulate glass virgin tears to be free
Santa Maria
Once again, marianismo
