Married For A Cow Poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen

Married For A Cow

And her father gave her to marriage
to an old man in town, he who
owned a piece of land and cows.
So one cow was her price to be
as bride to a strange man in town.

The man's party came to fetch her
And she cried in great fear
She was taught to simply behave
and keep quiet as obedient wife.
The cow had been delivered
to her family and she might
as well accept her destiny.
