Masks Poem by Tiya Sen

Masks

Life seems so much like a masked ball,
We wear masks as we waltz around the dance hall.
We mask pain with an impenetrable smile,
We mask fear with words so crude and hostile,
We mask loss with the darkest shade of indifference,
We mask anger with the strongest dose of indifference,
We mask loneliness with an invincible strength,
We mask no hopes with multitudes of faith,
Behind these masks no one is allowed to see,
The face that originally resembled you or me.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

A candid expression that bespeaks a question of identity and the sense of what is perceived as the 'real self'. The problematic social aspect that is expected to shape the individual and the dilemma of the self in its search for indetity seem thematic to this poem. A very introspective verse that carries the tone of a voice that appears to want candour in the somewhat disingenous routine of 'social norms' that are sadly inescapable.

Makes one wonder with all the masks.
