Mein Soldat Poem by Dallas Carter

Mein Soldat

The wind grazes softly against his face,
It whispers the words I wish I could say.
A question unspoken, the answer unknown,
Oh, how I wish you had known what you'd stolen.

Alone you had left me, with not even a kiss,
Oh, how I longed for the light brush of our lips.
Mein Soldat, what dear soldier of mine,
All I would do, just to see you one more time.

The scars of a hundred wars buried the soul in your eyes.
Death was all you had know, that of love and that of life.
To hold you in my arms, to alleviate your pain,
My selfish desires, a wish made in vain.

A soldier you were born, a soldier you were raised,
Fighting all your years, to the end of your days.
A dream burned long to ashes, and dust yet remained,
Such precious, pure as snow, early to be stained.

The memory of your name now engraved on my heart,
The flame in my eyes your presence once had sparked.
But now all I had is forgotten, forever to be lost,
Fallen you now lay, upon the cold winter's frost.

Alone stands your soul fading into dawn's light,
Shades of pure gold paint everything in your sight.
An angel God brought me on broken, bloodied wings,
Heaven's greatest gift, Mein Soldat, now just a dream.
